Kind-hearted residents from east Belfast have come to the rescue of one local charity shop, helping to protect it from further break-ins.

Last February staff at the Marie Curie shop on Belmont Road set about raising money to purchase shutters, after the shop was regularly targeted by thieves.

And it was a direct appeal through The CT that got the fundraising effort off to a flying start, when shop manager Linda Cobain contacted us last year.

Raising a total of £1,200 the shop was able to fit shutters just inside the door, protecting its stock.

Linda said: “To everyone who helped in any way we would like to say a big thank-you. We can continue our work to raise funds for our local hospice in east Belfast.

“Once the appeal featured in The CT it really got going.

“It was really touching, we had a number of pensioners contacting us saying they were housebound and asking if we could come and collect their donation.

“And we had one young lad, Jack Dawson-Saran, aged eight, who donated his £5 pocket money.”

Last February the staff decided to take action after the shop was targeted by thieves three times in three months. The worst damage came when the door was forced in, leaving staff to work without a door while it was fixed.
